The company selects Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Network Satellite for its business-critical systems
RALEIGH, NC – March 10, 2010 – Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Swedish Internet company Voddler has standardized its movie service on Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization. Voddler has also selected Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Network Satellite as the basis for its new infrastructure, providing the company with a centralized and scalable server platform.
Voddler offers its customers a wide variety of movies on-demand, and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization will enable the company to virtualize its web servers responsible for the movie service and the database servers containing all of its film titles.
“The powerful combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization made Red Hat the obvious solution to virtualize our key business-critical systems,” said Roger Kemmler, IT manager at Voddler. “Red Hat’s subscription-based model will help us support our infrastructure as we grow and launch the service in new markets. For this we require a stable and secure platform that is cost-effective, centrally administered and extremely scalable. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization meets all of those criteria.”
Voddler continually updates its catalogue of film titles and its growing customer base is using the service more frequently, which means the demand on web server and database capacity is continually increasing. A key requirement for Voddler is to have the flexibility to scale the server platform and redistribute resources to meet the demand for increased capacity. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization allows Voddler to consolidate and increase the effectiveness of its physical infrastructure by using features such as live migration and dynamic resource scheduling to help ensure that the physical systems are used close to their maximum capacity.
Red Hat Network Satellite, a systems management tool, helps Voddler to quickly and easily configure and maintain the virtualized servers running on the new Red Hat platform.
Consultancy EnjoyIT, a Red Hat Ready Partner, is providing support for the project implementation and is also acting in an advisory role.

Deployment of JBoss Enterprise BRMS improves scalability, efficiency and risk management for investment company
Raleigh, NC – January 20, 2010 – Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Millennium Global Investments (MGI), a specialist in developing and managing alternative investment products for institutional investors, has selected JBoss Enterprise BRMS (Business Rules Management System) for its mission-critical business rules repository.
London-based MGI wanted to improve the flexibility of its compliance system so that its business and trade rules could be revised and adjusted rapidly within a managed environment. MGI selected JBoss Enterprise BRMS to bring business rules into a managed environment, standardise business rules and support the scalability of the business.
The transparency of the new repository enables MGI business users to gain access to detailed information about why certain rules may prevent trading. This access improves business users’ efficiency and reduces the number of queries sent to MGI’s IT organisation. The transparent business rules repository is also an essential part of MGI’s risk management strategy
“Red Hat’s flexible subscription terms for JBoss Enterprise Middleware allowed us to deploy only the components needed for the new platform and to avoid vendor lock-in. Unlike other vendors, Red Hat offers the ability to support other applications of the rules engine, be it market signal monitoring or algorithmic trading,” said Richard Macaskill, managing director, IT & Systems Development, MGI. “We were very pleased with the level of support Red Hat provided during the new business rules repository’s development. We are extremely satisfied to have deployed an integrated business rules platform that has improved our efficiency and ability to manage risk.”

Flexibility, cost savings and compatibility drive selection of Red Hat as its enabler for customer-focused technology development
Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Jordan’s Security Depositary Center (SDC), a non-profit public utility institution that oversees the registration and deposit of securities, has implemented Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the foundation to its open source strategy.
SDC is currently implementing a number of e-services applications within an open source environment, including an e-payment system and the SDC Portal, which offers a wide range of electronic services. These services include enhanced account viewing, public data, statistical data, electronic initial public offering (e-IPO) and mailbox services.
In addition to the traditional benefits of working with open source, such as access to code, cost reduction and flexibility, SDC recognised the value of Red Hat Enterprise Linux interoperability as it deployed and developed with a range of hardware, including IBM and Dell. SDC has 20 x86 servers running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux that drive a range of applications, including mail systems, its web portal and intranet.
Key to SDC’s technology agility and management is the ability to manage its entire Linux environment from one console. Red Hat Network Satellite allows SDC to investigate and fix technical issues in a timely manner and with internal resources – assuring consistent run rates and performance.
“The main advantage to using open source and working with Red Hat is the flexibility to develop and maintain our technology assets internally,” said Samir Jaradat, CEO of SDC. “Red Hat not only saves us money, but it also provides us with a level of technology sophistication and interoperability that gives us the tools to develop solutions that directly meet the needs of our business.”
Red Hat Network (RHN) Satellite is Red Hat’s on-premises systems management solution that provides software updates, configuration management, provisioning and monitoring across both physical and virtual Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers. It offers customers opportunities to gain enhanced performance, centralized control and higher scalability for their systems, while deployed on a management server located inside the customer’s datacenter and firewall.
In September 2009, Red Hat released RHN Satellite 5.3, the first fully open source version of the product. This latest version offers opportunities for increased flexibility and faster provisioning setups for customers with the incorporation of open source Cobbler technology in its provisioning architecture. The 5.3 release is also designed to allow customers to better scale with server growth, offering the ability to manage large numbers of systems with comparable ease to managing one.
Recently, IDC also published a Red Hat-sponsored paper featuring the systems management benefits that customers have experienced with RHN Satellite. After interviewing 10 RHN Satellite customers in depth – crossing geographies and industry verticals — IDC reported significant return on investment (ROI) and productivity results for customers. Here are some of the highlights from the customer testimonials:
Average payback period of 4.8 months
A doubled increase in the number of Linux servers managed per system administrator
Average annual benefit of $82,521 per 100 Linux servers
Average of $23,207 in annual user productivity increase
In their own words, customers quoted in the paper showed that RHN Satellite helped them achieve:
Scalability: “…with Satellite Server, once things are set up and it is in place, managing 200 servers is as easy as managing one.”
Reduced costs: “For an OS install, we used to hire someone outside to do the work. We would buy the hardware, then we pay them to come on site, answer questions. So now, we are completely avoiding that cost.”
Faster server setup and management: “As far as time saving goes, I would say we are easily saving 20 hours per month because we aren’t doing things manually.”
Business growth: “In terms of the impact, I always count what we can sell in an hour. If the system is down, we can’t sell and that’s a revenue impact. In just one hour, we might lose millions of euros, so the impact is huge.”
